By Aaron Humes: Two (2) officers from the Belize Special Assignment Group (BSAG) and Special Patrol Unit (SPU) were shot this afternoon during the ongoing manhunt for the escaped prisoners from the Belize Central Prison.
Lance Corporal Flowers of BSAG – no first name given – is stable in hospital with gunshot wounds while his colleague Whakym Martinez was grazed by a bullet.
Police have confirmed that the pair came under fire near an orange orchard at Mile 5 1/2 on the Coastal Road and were injured.
In a distress call made by members of BSAG, the shootout and injury of the two (2) officers were reported. After the injured officers were moved to safety, police found 34 year old escaped prisoner Akeem Tillett dead in the orchard, his death most likely the result of the shooting encounter with BSAG. Beside Tillett was a fully loaded M4 Carbine weapon and an ammunition magazine.
Police deployed additional support to the area as it is believed that many of the escapees are somewhere between Miles 17-31 between the Sibun River and the George Price Highway.
Those in the area are asked to exercise extreme caution as the prisoners are considered armed and dangerous.
