By BBN Staff: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams is appealing to the family members of the inmates that escaped from the Belize Central Prison last night, to report their whereabouts, if known, to the police.
Williams, speaking at a press briefing today, said that he does not foresee the fugitives eluding law enforcement for much longer and reminded their relatives that offering any kind of assistance is an offense. Williams also stressed that the longer they remain at large the more dangerous the situation becomes for everyone.
“If it is that we have to be continuously pursuing them upon being caught, the fact that they’re armed can cause things to go in the opposite direction,” Williams said. “And so if your loved one is among these escapees, please, it’s not too late to ask them to surrender themselves to the authorities and make life easier for them and for us.”
The 28 inmates escaped from the prison last night, after relieving three guards of their weapons and uniforms, and locking them up in a prison cell. The Ministry of National Security announced today that there will be an independent investigation into the prison break, to learn how it really happened and who the masterminds collaborated with.
Thus far, authorities have already recaptured one of the escapees.
