By BBN Staff: The United States Embassy in Belize this morning issued a security alert for all US citizens in Belize following the mass prison break that occurred on Monday night.

“Due to the recent escape of 28 prisoners from the Belize Central Prison, we remind all American citizens in Belize to remain vigilant at all times. At this time, additional efforts to detain escapees is underway and unconfirmed reports of gunfire along the Coastal Road have been reported,” the embassy noted.

The Embassy advises that increased police and military presence in the form of patrols and vehicle checkpoints along highways is expected.

The Embassy urges all American citizens to comply with instructions to stop and answer questions from officers.

Additionally, the Embassy provided a list of safety practices including:

  • Limit travel on highways and secondary roads in Hattieville and surrounding areas.
  • If someone attempts to “flag you down” do NOT stop.
  • Keep your vehicle doors locked when driving and do not keep valuables inside.
  • Keep doors and windows of your residence locked when at home and away.
  • Use your alarm system.
  • Report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
