Dr. Manzanero: “30 percent of country will be covered by COVAX vaccine”

Posted: Friday, October 16, 2020. 10:15 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: About 120 thousand Belizeans, 30 percent of the population, will be covered by an approved vaccine under the World Health Organization (WHO) Covax vaccine plan according to Director of Health Services, Dr. Marvin Manzanero.

Belize has made a downpayment of millions to join the plan and is due to pay about $2 million more.

It has been thought that frontline workers and the most vulnerable of the population would be treated first followed by others.

The Ministry of Health is following up outbreaks of infections among medical staff as well as security personnel. Seven Coast Guard, 67 police officers and 62 BDF soldiers have tested positive for COVID-19 through the emergency.

Dr. Manzanero observed that the flow of returns and arrivals through the International Airport has been going well. Earlier he clarified that for purposes of non-essential travel, it is not necessary to obtain a COVID-19 test to leave Belize, though the country being traveled to may require it.
