By BBN Staff: Since the first case was reported back in Wuhan, China back in December 2019, COVID-19 has affected over 40 million people worldwide, according to the latest statistics by Worldometer.
The statistics show that as of 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 18, 2020, there were 40,038,606 cases worldwide.
There are currently over 8.98 million active cases, with only 1 percent of those (71,968) being considered serious or critical.
Over 1.15 million people have died from the virus worldwide, and over 29.94 million have managed to recover.
The United States remains the hardest-hit country in the world, with over 8.34 million cases and 224,284 deaths.
Since becoming the second-hardest hit country by the number of infections back in September, cases in India continue to soar, reaching over 7.49 million. India has recorded 116,064 deaths making it the third-hardest hit country by the number of deaths only.
Brazil the thrid-hardest country in the world by the number of infections (5.22 million) is still second worldwide by the number of deaths (153,690).
Belize has confirmed 2,775 cases, 1,000 of which were from the Orange Walk district alone, and 43 people have died from the virus.
