By BBN Staff: The COVID-19 pandemic made its way to Belize in March, at which point the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) had already begun gearing up for the 2020 Population and Housing Census, which was supposed to begin in May. While the pandemic effectively postponed the Census this year, the SIB said this week that it hopes to conduct the Census in May 2021, because the data gathered from it is vital to the country.
Acting Director-General of the SIB Diana Trejo, told Breaking Belize News that, since conducting the Census via telephone is not an option for Belize, the SIB is taking every precaution that can be made to protect its staff as they go out into the field to conduct interviews as well as those being interviewed.
“The census is very very important especially the types of relief efforts and response efforts that have to be made need the best information,” Trejo explained. “The more up-to-date the information is on the population, the more effective those efforts will be.”
Trejo said that the Census is currently set for May 2021, provided that there is no worsening of the health situation or other extremely prohibitive circumstances.
According to the SIB, censuses in Belize go back more than 225 years, beginning with the British settlement in the Bay of Honduras, British Honduras, and eventually the country of Belize. The Institute said that the population grew from 2,493 in 1790, to 322,441 in 2010, which was the last Census held in Belize.
