Almost 2,000 deaths in Belize last year, heart disease the main cause

By BBN Staff: Data from the Ministry of Health (MOH), released this week, is showing that almost 2,000 people died in Belize in 2019, the majority of which died from heart disease.

The MOH’s data said that total deaths numbered 1,949, with 263 of those being due to diseases of the heart.

Cancers (Malignant Neoplasms) of various kinds represented the second-leading cause of death in Belize, claiming 247 lives, while diabetes was the third-leading cause of death at 160 deaths.

Accidental injuries, the fourth leading cause of death, claimed 149 lives, edging out homicides which were responsible for 142 deaths.

The other top causes of death included cerebrovascular disease, HIV/AIDS, influenza and pneumonia, conditions relating to the perinatal period,  essential hypertension, and hypertensive renal disease. There were also 316 deaths categorized as being from “Other causes.”

The Belize district had the highest death rate per 10,000 population (58. 3 percent-723 deaths), followed by Cayo (39.7 percent -393 deaths), and then Orange Walk (45.5- 239 deaths). Corozal, Stann Creek, and Toledo had the lowest death rates respectively.
