By Aaron Humes: Today would have been Queen of Brukdown Leela Genus Vernon’s 70th birthday.
She passed in February of 2017 while being treated for chronic renal failure at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City.
The Punta Gorda Town native leaves behind a rich musical legacy, promoting the Kriol culture in music and song.

The ruling United Democratic Party recognized her birth date on its social media today, and there is a museum and restaurant in her memory in P.G. while Belize City’s Stella Maris School named their music room after her.
