By Aaron Humes: Bus driver Conroy Roches began a five-year prison sentence Wednesday after pleading guilty to grievous harm.

But no amount of time, says domestic violence survivor Sherema Graham, can take away her pain.

Roches inflicted severe injury to Graham at her home in Lords Bank, Belize District in April of 2015, leaving her with a shattered jaw bone, two broken teeth, and the loss of another tooth. The effects of the physical damages still persist to this day. Among other things, she struggles with severe migraine headaches, pain in her face during weather changes. She needed treatment abroad in the aftermath.

Roches was visiting his son but started an argument with Graham. They had broken up earlier on and she insisted she would not take him back, leading him to snap and attack her with devastating consequences.

Roches stood trial before Justice Williams in March, but he saved the court time by pleading guilty to the offense. Justice Williams passed a sentence on him and ruled that he is to serve 5 years in jail. But, she deducted 1 year from the sentence, for his guilty plea, and 28 days for the time he spent on remand.

Graham said she had expected the maximum 7-year term and even then that would not have been enough. But she finally has the closure she sought, and can move on from the tragedy.
