Six-year-old hospitalized at KHMH with Covid-19

By BBN Staff: While most of the patients in Belize affected by COVID-19 have been adults, the country has seen its first child hospitalized from the virus, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero explained today that the child is a six-year-old male who was referred from the Northern Regional Hospital.

The child, who also has a pre-existing condition affecting his kidneys, is at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital’s (KHMH) COVID-19 Unit.

“His X-ray is documenting that he has pneumonia which is an infection of the lower lung.

He has been hospitalized as of yesterday evening, currently stable not requiring supplementary oxygen but he is the first pediatric case hospitalized at the Karl Heusner’s COVID-19 Unit,” Manzanero said.

Manzanero added that there are six other patients hospitalized in the unit at the KHMH, one of them is ventilated, two are on a high flow of oxygen, and the others are on supplementary oxygen, which means they are being weaned off oxygen to see if they can breathe without it before they are discharged.
