By BBN Staff: The Southern Environmental Association (SEA) informed that today, a joint patrol conducted by SEA rangers and personnel from the Belize Coast Guard along the coast near Seine Bight Village led to the confiscation of three illegal gillnets.
The gillnets were set 35 yards, 50 yards and 150 yards from the shore, respectively.
Three Bonefish and one permit, both of which are protected species, were found entangled in the nets.
SEA also found one hammerhead shark, for which the fishing season is currently closed, and other fish species were also found entangled in the nets.
There was no one within the vicinity, therefore, the nets were labeled as found property.
Fisherfolk are reminded that βsetting gillnet within Β½ mile of any inhabited localityβ is an offense.
SEA says that it will continue to conduct strategic patrols to ensure the protection of Belizeβs marine resources and thanks the Belize Coast Guard for their continued support.
