FDA approves first treatment for COVID-19; antiviral Remdesivir

Posted: Friday, October 23, 2020. 1:42 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Gilead Sciences’ antiviral drug remdesivir as a treatment for COVID-19, CNBC reports.

Earlier this year, the FDA approved only an emergency use authorization for hospitals and doctors. Health professionals could have used the drug on patients hospitalized with COVID-19 even though it wasn’t formally approved.

The report notes that the antiviral helped to shorten the recovery time of some hospitalized patients.

It was also one of the medicines used to treat President Donald Trump earlier this month when he tested positive for COVID-19.

Remdesivir has become the first and only fully approved treatment in the US for COVID-19.
