Prime Ministerial debate tackles economic, sustainable, national development

Posted: Friday, October 23, 2020. 11:52 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The next major event on the political calendar ahead of general elections on November 11 is an organized debate among leaders of four political parties: the People’s United Party (PUP); United Democratic Party (UDP); Belize Progressive Party (BPP); and Belize People’s Front (BPF), to be held next Wednesday night, October 28.

A moderator to be announced will guide debate on topics of economic, sustainable, and national development, with questions taken from established organizations, the parties themselves, and social media.

The Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), co-organizer with LOVE FM and Galen University, approached multiple organizations to submit questions of 50 words or less, with no derogatory or partisan statements, on the topics above, to be submitted by October 26. The list of organizations is as follows: Belize Network of NGOs; Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA); Belize Agro-Productive Sector Group; Spanish Lookout Business Chamber; Association of Tertiary Level Institutions of Belize (ATLIB); Belize Medical & Dental Association; Nurses Association of Belize; National AIDS Commission; National Women’s Commission; YWCA; YMCA; Council of Churches/National Evangelical Association of Churches; Youth Votes/Voice Matters Group; Association of Protected Areas Management Organizations (APAMO), and National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB).

The first round of questions, six in all, will be drawn from these at random and answered within 90 seconds by each candidate.

The second round of questions will be from the parties themselves, directed to each leader, and answered similarly with no derogatory or defamatory statements allowed.

The third round of questions will be taken from social media, two for each candidate.

The event is expected to last about two hours.

Officially, the UDP’s Patrick Faber, the BPP’s Patrick Rogers, and BPF’s Nancy Marin have committed to participating with the PUP’s John Briceño also showing interest. However, Faber and Briceño say they will discuss certain considerations and arrangements to ensure their participation.
