By Aaron Humes: Police have been busy this weekend in the Orange Walk and Cayo Districts, pulling in partygoers for hosting and attending an illegal social gathering – i.e., one with more than ten persons especially those not resident at the hosting site.
Police stopped a party in progress on Saturday night on Gravel Lane, Orange Walk Town, with 17 persons in attendance under a tent with balloons and loud music. All were arrested and held at the town Police Station.
Today in Roaring Creek, Cayo District, police hauled in more than 40 persons attending a party in the village. There were also children in attendance, according to reports, and these were handed over to adult relatives.
Police Commissioner Chester Williams has been consistently critical of persons still choosing to host such gatherings at this time. Earlier today he bluntly wrote on social media, “…some of us are so selfish and self-centered that they only think about their personal instant gratification, recklessly throwing parties and not adhering to the COVID-19 protocols. At the end of the day, it is our most vulnerable population, the elderly, those with pre-existing health conditions, and now our children who are feeling the (brunt) of the irresponsible behavior of others.”
Offenses under the Quarantine Regulations draw a fine of up to $5,000 and/or up-to 2 years in prison as well as mandatory quarantine and testing for COVID-19.
