Elections and Boundaries welcomes all voters – even COVID-19 positive

By Aaron Humes: Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai does not expect voters positive for COVID-19 to stay away from the polling booth on November 11, even if outgoing Prime Minister Dean Barrow has strongly advised it.

Ten days ago, at a press briefing, the Prime Minister said he could not see how it could be permitted, even by proxy. “I suspect that the fears of those that are not positive but who already have reservations…those fears will become even more pronounced,” adding his regrets.

There has been widespread backlash and the Opposition has pitched a “vote from hospital” plan.

But CEO Tamai told us that election workers will not know by sight who has COVID-19; in fact, they will treat themselves, each other, and anyone they come into contact with that day as having COVID-19.

Thus, wearing of masks will be mandatory, voters will be kept six feet apart, and voters will be asked to sanitize before entering the polling station and again after dipping their fingers into the indelible ink.

The Election and Boundaries Department has no control over who comes to vote, said Tamai, and so everyone can exercise their franchise, on condition that it’s get in, vote, and don’t hang around.
