Leadership debate committee urges political leaders to commit to debate

Posted: Monday, October 26, 2020. 8:17 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Leadership Debate Committee (LDC) today issued an update on the proposed Prime Ministerial Debate.

The committee says that the leaders of the UDP, PUP, BPP and BPF were invited for a virtual meeting today for clarifications of rules and format.

The committee says that it requested leaders to sign a commitment statement that they would adhere to the rules and regulations set for the debate on October 28 at 8 p.m.

However, the BPP and BPF had accepted. But, the PUP indicated that unless queries were answered by way of a meeting with the LDC, the Leader would not be in a position to indicate whether he will participate in the debate or not.

UDP Leader had indicated that he would participate but also said that he would do so only if all leaders were willing to participate.

The committee noted that all concerns were addressed in letters to all leaders or by way of inviting the leaders to air those concerns in the meeting held today at 2:00 p.m. prior to submitting their signed Statement of Commitment.

But, only the BPF and BPP have so far committed.

“It is important to note that all deadlines were put in place specifically to allow questions and concerns to be answered, and for adequate production time to be allotted for the organizers. As the Debate nears, it becomes increasingly difficult for the LDC to accommodate further extensions and/or concessions for leaders as it relates to the guidelines and format provided by the Jamaica Debates Commission,” the committee noted.

The committee further expressed that the public is interested and will be disappointed in the absence of any leader.

“Particularly considering the uncertainty and instability of the times Belize faces, the LDC saw this as an ideal opportunity for leaders to stand up, speak out and differentiate their ability to lead as well as to instil confidence in their vision for achieving sustainable development in Belize, within a controlled environment,” it added.

Therefore, the committee has extended the deadline for the commitment letters to tomorrow at 3 p.m.
