Post Office staff members have concerns over positive COVID-19 case

By BBN Staff: A staff member from the General Post Office (GPO) tested positive for COVID-19, leaving some of the remaining staff members with serious health and safety concerns.

Today, a source from within the GPO told Breaking Belize News (BBN) that the staff’s concerns stem from management’s decision to only test 18 employees from the GPO that are believed to have been in contact with the patient. The source stresses that the staffer was on the job up to the day before the positive test was announced, and as such, could have likely come in contact with more than the 18 people who were selected for testing.

Concerns also exist with respect to how the 18 people were selected.

BBN reached out to the Post Master General, James Gabriel, but was told he was unavailable for comment.

According to an internal memo sent out to GPO staff, the employee tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, October 24. Despite the discovery, the GPO remains open, to avoid disruption of service to the public. Every staff member who did not form a part of the contact tracing has been required to report to work. The GPO was fumigated on Sunday, and the staff is being cautioned to abide by all safety protocols issued by the Ministry of Health to avoid the spread of the virus.
