By Aaron Humes: On Thursday, the Caribbean region’s heads of government meet virtually in regular session for the 41st time.
On the heels of special meetings in May, August and September, the various Prime Ministers, Presidents and so on will be discussing primarily the health, financial and economic development implications of the COVID-19 pandemic. Also on the list of topics is blacklisting for tax policy and governance as employed by the European Union, which CARICOM recently condemned in a statement as “unilateral, arbitrary and non-transparent;” the regional private sector as well as regional security.
Thursday’s meeting will be held under the chairmanship of current Chairman of CARICOM, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
It will likely be the last for a former CARICOM chairman, Prime Minister of Belize Dean Barrow, who demits office after the November 11 general elections; if Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrington appears in his stead it will be his last as well as he too steps down from office.
Appearing as a special guest is the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
