Gyms reopening at the end of November

Posted: Tuesday, October 27, 2020. 1:28 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Fitness enthusiasts will have to wait another month for the reopening of gymnasiums, according to the National COVID-19 Oversight Committee (NOC).

The Committee announced this week that it has approved the request of the National Fitness Association (NFA) to allow for the reopening of gyms, but the recent spike in COVID-19 infections influenced the decision to push back the proposed reopening date.

“Again because of the current surge, the NOC decided that notwithstanding the meticulous and commendable work of the NAC proposal, the approved resumption of operations by gyms and fitness centers would now take place on November 30th instead of the requested date of October 30th,” the NOC said.

The NFA told Breaking Belize News today that it would be reserving comment for a later date.

The association, which represents 25 gyms countrywide, previously noted that there is no scientific evidence to support that gyms are a major spreading point for COVID-19. The NFA also said that it put together a proposal for reopening gyms, that exceeded the safety requirements of some other facilities that are currently being allowed to open.
