PUP to oppose redistricting injunction in court

Posted: Tuesday, October 27, 2020. 5:54 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The People’s United Party says that it will appear in the Supreme Court tomorrow, Wednesday, to oppose – “resist” in its words – an injunction to halt General Elections due on November 11 for the process of redistricting.

Eight complainants known collectively as the Belize PEACE Movement say it is unconstitutional at present for the elections to proceed on the basis that the Elections and Boundaries Commission has failed to make the electoral boundaries as nearly equal as possible under the Constitution.

The PUP plans to advance an argument that the Constitution also sets out a timeline for elections to be carried out; that voting is sacred and Belizeans should not be denied the right to vote at this late stage.

The opposition says is committed once again to carrying out a redistricting process once elected by majority in this election, but that no government can do so in such a short time

The PUP concludes, “We have no quarrel with those who are advocating for such an exercise. Our contention is based on the late filing of such an application, days before a critical election, and the fact that entertaining such an application would contravene the Constitution of Belize.”

BBN will have coverage of this on Wednesday.
