By Aaron Humes: At this hour Acting Chief Justice, Michelle Arana, is hearing arguments from the Belize PEACE Movement in regard to postponing General Elections so that a redistricting of electoral divisions can take place.
At least one major political party, the People’s United Party, has promised to oppose the application, in which Lord Michael Ashcroft is an interested party.
The court has before it, a report from election expert, Sean Trende, concerning the proportion of the electoral divisions.
Because redistricting only comes into effect after a General election, the BPM argues that if the current election due November 11 is allowed to go ahead it would be in violation of the Constitution.
The National Assembly is already dissolved which further complicates matters.
