Public Utilities Commission recommends reduced average electricity rate

Posted: Thursday, October 29, 2020. 8:07 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is proposing a slightly lower average rate for electricity for the next four years.

Belizeans would pay an average of 40.32 cents per killowatthour, down from 41.51 cents at the moment and far less than the 45.33 cents BEL asked for in the Full Tariff Review Proceeding covering 2020-2024. The PUC decision is final.

The PUC conducts annual reviews of BEL’s investments and business and may set rates depending on happenings at the time.

BEL had proposed hundreds of millions in investments including linking Caye Caulker to the national electricity grid.
