By BBN Staff: Alexander Ariola, student and rising star in Belize’s basketball community, is taking his game to new heights after landing an athletic scholarship to Briercrest College in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Ariola, who was 2019 regular season MVP while playing for the SJC Wildcats and 3-Point competition winner at the Ahmadiyya Basketball League All-Star game last year, will be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in the Fall 2021 Semester at Briercrest, as well as playing on the school’s basketball team the  Briercrest Clippers.

Ariola told Breaking Belize News today that the scholarship is a step in manifesting his lifelong dream to play basketball at a higher level. He notes that landing the scholarship required discipline on and off the court.

“I just had to keep a balance, so my school work would be my first priority, so I made sure I got that done first then concentrated on my basketball,” Ariola said.

His mother, Beverly Wade, told our newsroom that his success was a concentrated, team effort, which involved a heavy emphasis on his education and maintaining a grade point average of over 3.0 but also enrolling him in structured basketball programs which could help him to elevate his skills. Beverly Wade who is also Belize’s Fisheries Administrator noted that “to be successful at anything you need discipline and a good support system”.

Wade also noted that Karym Coleman and Bryton Codd, founders of the BK Sports Group which seeks to help source opportunities for the development of education and sports for Belizean students, also attend Briercrest College and were instrumental in Ariola’s selection because of the excellence they displayed in Canada. Wade says she is looking to her son to be another in the line of Belizeans that makes Belize proud internationally.
