By BBN Staff: Director of Health Services (DHS) Dr. Marvin Manzanero said that at 1 a.m. on Friday, he intervened for a patient who was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital from Corozal.
The patient, a highly suspected case of COVID-19, arrived after midnight at the KHMH. However, there were no beds ready for the patient.
Therefore, the family took the patient to the Belize Healthcare Partners Limited that requested a payment before admitting the patient. The family then asked the DHS to intervene.
“That patient came from Corozal, seemed to require a level of intubation. My understanding from Karl Huesner is they had asked Corozal if they could wait a couple of hours because they were trying to clean the room. Whatever miscommunication and that person was taken at the request obviously family members who were seeing a family member in a dire situation to Healthcare Partners. I was not made aware of that situation until I was called to be told that there was an ambulance at Healthcare Partners where they were not being allowed to drop off a patient and that’s when we start doing the investigation,” Manzanero explained.
He said that the patient was returned to KHMH and the family waited there until they hospital sorted out the area for the patient.
