Potential record-breaking storm headed for Central America

By Aaron Humes: Entering the final month of the hurricane season, there is a chance 2020 will still become the most active on record.

A disturbance moving through the Caribbean has a likelihood of becoming a new tropical depression over the weekend. Conditions will become more favorable for tropical development as the disturbance moves west. In the short term, it is headed toward Central America.

If it develops it will receive the name Eta, becoming the 28th named storm, passing the year 2005. That year had a 28th storm which was not named, hence if Eta forms it would be the deepest we have gone into the Greek alphabet for names. Another storm would set the outright record.

Hurricane season runs through November 30.
