By BBN Staff: The world’s strongest storm of 2020 to date, Typhoon Goni, hit the Philippines today, bringing with it sustained winds of 140mph (225kph) and gusts of 174mph (280kph), reports Sky News.

Goni, which was classed as a “Super Typhoon” when it hit, has killed at least four people and has almost 350,000 others sheltering in evacuation centers as of 11:00 a.m. today.

Goni made landfall in the southern Bicol region, causing massive damage including volcanic mudflows, as well as electricity supply and communication service outages.

Reports are that the victims included one person who was reportedly hit by a tree and a five-year-old who was washed away after a river overflowed in Albay province.

Goni has since been downgraded to “Typhoon” category since making landfall.
