PUP condemns arrest of Blue Creek pastor and parishioners

Posted: Monday, November 2, 2020. 1:21 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The People’s United Party (PUP) has condemned a decision taken by the Belize Police Department to arrest an Orange Walk pastor and his parishioners for holding a church service in Blue Creek yesterday.

“The villagers were peacefully attending church on the sacred Sunday when the police arrested them. This was completely unnecessary,” the PUP said.

The party added that it hopes the matter can be resolved respectfully and pleaded with the police department to show some restraint when dealing with people in these difficult times.

A video circulating on social media yesterday shows a tense altercation between police and the parishioners as they prepare to arrest the pastor for violating the COVID-19 prevention protocols established by the National COVID-19 Oversight Committee (NOC). The pastor had more than 10 people in attendance and proper mask-wearing etiquette was not being practiced at the service, based on the video footage.
