By Aaron Humes: Three weeks after their daring break-out from the Central Prison at Hattieville, five of 28 total escapees remain on the run.
“We continue to work along with the prison authorities to locate these individuals and return them to prison,” said Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, adding that “they continue to expect and act on tips from the general public as to their whereabouts”.
Defying legal strictures that harbouring and helping fugitives is unlawful, Police believe the men may well be getting assistance from family members and others to survive for as long as they have.
The group overpowered and tied up security guards in the afternoon of October 12, the Pan American Day holiday, and hightailed it into central and southern Belize. One was killed in a shootout with authorities but the others were largely apprehended without incident.
