By BBN Staff: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is reporting that Hurricane Eta, a category 4 storm is an extremely dangerous hurricane and continues to inch closer to the coast of Nicaragua.

“Life-threatening storm surge, catastrophic winds, flash flooding, and landslides are expected across portions of Central America, the NHC noted.

Philip Klotzbach, a meteorologist at Colorado State University who specializes in Atlantic basin hurricane forecasts said that Eta is the strongest Atlantic hurricane this late in the calendar year since Otto in 2016.

As of 8 a.m. today, Hurricane Eta was about 30 miles southeast of Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua with maximum sustained winds near 145 mph.

“Little change in strength is likely before landfall. The weakening will begin after the center moves inland later today. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles, from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles, ” the NHC said.

This morning, the National Meteorological Service of Belize (Belize Met Service) issued a flood watch for the Belize, Cayo, Stann Creek, and Toledo Districts and said that a small craft warning is in effect for the coastal waters of the country and that operators of small crafts should seek safe harbor.

The Belize Met Service continues to closely monitor the progress of Hurricane Eta and residents are advised to be prepared and listen to official information from the Belize Met Service and NEMO.

Eta is the 12th hurricane of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season and the 28th named Atlantic storm this season tying the 2005 record for named storms.

The Atlantic hurricane season continues until November, 30 2020.
