By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: It is decision day 2020 for all American voters. Former Vice President Joe Biden faces off with incumbent President Donald Trump.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and deepening political polarization, Americans head to the polls to elect a new President.

According to The Guardian, a record-breaking 100 million Americans voted ahead of election day making it the first presidential elections in history in which more people voted in advance of election day.

The media as well as election officials say that the winner of the elections could be announced by midnight.

The Washington Post reports that Biden was leading Trump by 10 percentage of points nationally, this is according to an average of national polls since October 26.

Surveys done by the Pew Research Center indicated that there is high engagement from voters in the 2020 elections and some key issues to determine the vote would be the economy, healthcare, supreme court appointments, COVID-19, violent crimes and foreign policy among others. Those statistics showed that 79% of registered voters said that the economy would be very important in them making a decision on Trump or Biden.

Data collected by the center also shows that women have outnumbered men in the voting booth every Presidential elections since 1984.

During a session with Political science professor and author, Dr. Christina Wolbrecht, she explained how women voters in the US have consistently participated in elections at a higher rate than men. In addition, Wolbrecht said that the commitment of women participation in elections is high.

Wolbrecht noted that in a poll conducted among women voters, more women said they voted for Joe Biden in the Presidential elections than for Donald Trump.

She also explained that the reasons for gender gap in elections include that parties differ on women’s rights.
