Belize Electricity Limited removing political signs from light posts for safety reasons

Posted: Wednesday, November 4, 2020. 1:55 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) says it has begun removing political signs, banners, and flags, that are attached to light posts as they pose significant safety risks to those in communities where they are installed.

BEL explained that political party signs make up the majority of the hazards on the light posts having been installed with sticks, nails, and staples on poles underneath low voltage power lines, which violates the company’s standards.

“Our teams countrywide are working diligently to address the hazards caused by unsafe attachments on utility poles in communities across the country. These dangerous practices can cause accidents, injury to personnel during power line works and power outages that interrupt our service to customers, BEL said. “We have been in dialogue with all political parties and continue to plea for their cooperation in discontinuing these hazardous practices. However, the installation of these unsafe attachments have continued and continue to pose threats to public safety and can cause power outages.”

BEL notes that the risks associated with political signs causing some kind of harm or hazard may have been increased due to the ongoing inclement weather, continuous rain, and wind brought on by Tropical Storm Eta. BEL said that its efforts are a part of its continued commitment to offering safe and reliable service to its customers.
