PUP calls for churches to pray for Belize

Posted: Sunday, November 8, 2020. 9:07 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The People’s United Party (PUP) is calling on churches countrywide to pray for Belize as the country battles various hardships heading into the upcoming elections on Wednesday, November 11.

The PUP notes that, headed into the election, Belize was already battling the COVID-19 pandemic, when the storm Eta caused severe flooding in portions of the country, affecting the lives of thousands of Belizeans, particularly in the Cayo district.

“We ask the nation, our churches, and our Christian faithful from your homes or pulpits to pray for those who have been affected, that they may find shelter and comfort, that they remain safe and that their lives and the lives of their loved ones be restored to some degree of normalcy very quickly,” the PUP said.

The Party also asked that churches pray for the safety of all those headed out to vote in the election.

At a press conference yesterday, Prime Minister Dean Barrow explained that the elections will proceed as planned because there is no provision in the Constitution that provides for a postponement under the current circumstances. He noted that only an extreme circumstance such as a direct hit from Eta, while it was at hurricane strength, would have permitted the postponement of the elections.
