By BBN Staff: The COVID-19 pandemic is an indiscriminate illness that infects and claimes the lives of persons regardless of age, gender, or profession. The Belize Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its own who died at the age of 25 and the Ministry of Health (MOH) noted today that COVID-19 was a contributing factor in his death.
The MOH explained today that the officer, who was from Patchakan, Corozal had been battling for months with a chronic throat/sinus infection. Director of Health services Dr, Marvin Manzanero said that the officer had seen several physicians within the past three months during this time he was swabbed for COVID-19. Manzanero noted that it was unclear if he had informed his physicians that he had tested positive.
On Wednesday, November 4, the patient had undergone surgery in an attempt to address his chronic condition, but went into cardiac arrest during the procedure and was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
“Even though, COVID-19, you cannot necessarily say it was the cause of death in this particular instance it may still be a contributing factor given the infection that is now being described by the doctor…” Manzanero said.
