Over 70 pregnant women diagnosed with COVID-19 in Belize

Posted: Monday, November 9, 2020. 7:00 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The COVID-19 pandemic has proven indiscriminate, infecting, and claiming the lives of the young, old, and even pregnant. The Ministry of Health reported today that a total of 71 pregnant women have been diagnosed since the pandemic made its way to Belize back in March.

Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero said that of the total number of infected, 26 of them have delivered already, leaving 45 with deliveries pending.

“The majority of them have been close contacts of a positive case that were identified through routine contact tracing,” Manzanero said.

He noted that there has been one COVID-19 patient who died not long after delivering her child via C-section, while another has delivered via C-Section and currently remains intubated.

Of the 4,167 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Belize, 1,899 of them have been women. Women also represent 22 of the total 70 deaths from the virus. The MOH is expected to release an update to the testing and number of confirmed cases later today.
