BBN poll: Voters say plans and manifesto are most important in assessing candidates

Posted: Monday, November 9, 2020. 10:19 pm CST.

By Aaron Hume: In Breaking Belize News’ online poll that began in October and completed earlier today, respondents were asked the following: “On what basis do you assess a political candidate?”

For some in Belize, their families are classed as PUP or UDP; depending on their level of die-hard support, it is feast or famine.

But of those polled (3,947 respondents), fewer than 5 per cent say they assess candidates by “family inclination.”

Nearly half (49.8 per cent), however, say they assess whom they are going to vote for after reading their plans and manifesto. The PUP this year released the majority of their manifesto, #planBelize, via virtual presentations on social media, while the UDP released theirs in one drop a week after formally launching their campaign.

Seventeen per cent favour candidates by their family values; 16 per cent through the news media; and 14 per cent in public debates and addresses.

We’ll see how it works with Wednesday’s election.
