COVID-19 vaccine up to 90 percent effective in clinical trials

By BBN Staff: There are several COVID-19 vaccines in development, but recently one has proven to be 90 percent effective in clinical trials, reports the BBC.

The vaccine, developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, has been tested on 43,500 people in six countries ( the United States, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, and Turkey ) and showed 90 percent effectiveness by the second dose with no safety concerns raised to date.

The companies say they plan to apply for emergency approval to use the vaccine by the end of November, with  Pfizer saying it can supply  50 million doses by the end of December and an additional 1.3 billion doses by the end of 2021.

The vaccine is administered in two doses, given three weeks apart, and trains the immune system to make both antibodies and T-cells to fight Sars-Cov-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19.

 The United Kingdom is reportedly getting 10 million doses by the end of the year, apart from another 30 million doses it has already ordered. 

The BBC notes that there are around a dozen over vaccines in the final stages of testing (Phase 3 trials); however, this is the first vaccine to show any results.
