Fashion designer, Maureen Navarette highlighted by U.S. Embassy For Entrepreneur Spotlight

By BBN Staff: The United States Embassy in Belize is featuring Belizean entrepreneurs and for the month of November, the spotlight is on fashion designer Maureen Navarette.

Maureen is a fashion designer who started her business 15 years ago.

Maureen learned to sew from her grandmother as a child and took some classes in high school which led her to becoming a seamstress, sewing the designs of others.

She quickly realized that while she learned a lot as a seamstress she was more interested in creating designs of her own.

Maureen entered the designer world through a fashion show where she designed for models showcasing her creations.

This fashion show was successful in attracting her initial customer base and she began designing bridalwear such as wedding and bridesmaid dresses. Although Maureen started designing bridalwear she quickly found that she was interested in making a variety of things ranging from home décor to women’s clothes.

She even became interested in making kids clothes after she had her first daughter Amy and realized that cute children’s clothes were difficult to find and began designing for the children’s market as well.

Her brand name, Amaur, a combination of her first daughter’s name Amy and her own, was chosen to reflect her various interests and versatility as a designer. She has since participated in around 12 fashion shows.

When the pandemic began, her business experienced some difficulties but because of her versatility as a designer, Maureen decided to start making face masks to aid in preventative measures against Covid-19. She started making masks for the coast guard and expanded to the Belizean public.

She makes both personalized masks and collections both of which have received positive responses. More information on her business and masks can be found on her Facebook page AMAUR.

Starting a business was not easy and like any entrepreneur, Maureen had to overcome obstacles by being resilient and innovative. She enjoys her work and loves being able to share her designs with the Belizean community.
