By Aaron Humes: The Belize P.E.A.C.E. Movement has had little luck getting individual candidates, to sign up to its 20 Point Best Governance P.E.A.C.E. Pledge 2020 up to this, the last day before general elections.
Only Belize Progressive Party (BPP) candidate in Fort George Wil Maheia has signed; there have been no signatures from candidates of the People’s United Party (PUP) or the United Democratic Party (UDP).
The Belize People’s Front, with a slate of 17 candidates, agreed to sign as a group but the Belize P.E.A.C.E. Movement rejected this on the basis that, as strange as it is, no political party is legally registered in Belize and that the pledge is for individual candidates to sign as a commitment to the proposals in the P.E.A.C.E. pledge.
The P.E.A.C.E. movement noted that signing the 20 Point Governance was about personal values being shared to constituents, not what the political parties stand for.
With hours to go before polls open, the Belize P.E.A.C.E. Movement says to candidates, “put country before party and just sign the P.E.A.C.E. Pledge 2020 individually.
