Trump refuses to concede U.S. election, lawsuits and federal investigations follow alleged fraud claims

Posted: Tuesday, November 10, 2020. 2:37 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Results of the recent U.S. election have still not been 100 percent confirmed as results are still pending in several states but as Democratic candidate has secured enough electoral college points, US media has projected the election in his favor. Incumbent U.S. President, Donald Trump, however, whose victory appears mathematically improbable, has refused to concede the presidency to Biden as is customary among candidates following an election.

As several media houses have pointed out, though. conceding an election is considered the classy thing to do and is customary but is not compulsory by law.

Trump, meanwhile, has mounted legal suits in several states where Biden was announced the winner with close margins.

Top U.S. government officials have drawn scrutiny while the world observes the incumbent administration’s response to election results. U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, was specifically quoted as saying: “There will be a smooth transition to a second Trump administration,” when asked about how the transition process was going.

Critics argue that the top US diplomat’s words sound somewhat different to statements he has made about other country’s elections – he has urged leaders to accept election results and commit to the democratic process.

World leaders from various countries have already congratulated Biden on the win and made phone calls to the declared president-elect including calls from UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Last week’s U.S. election was observed by an electoral observer mission from the Organization of American States (OAS). Despite Trump’s claims of fraud, which to this point have not been based on any credible evidence, the OAS commended the U.S. for the conduct of its election process.

The 28 expert delegation of observers from 13 countries said in its preliminary report: “While the environment of the elections was competitive and fraught, the ability of voters across the country to access the vote in less than ideal circumstances exemplifies the democracy for which the United States is renowned and which it has championed across the globe.

The OAS Mission urges all political parties, candidates and citizens to allow this democracy to prevail and to allow the remainder of the electoral process to unfold within the framework of the law.”

Biden’s transition team is still waiting for the federal funding and office space it needs to get to work on taking over the levers of power.

That depends on a federal agency – the General Services Administration (GSA) – led by Trump appointee Emily Murphy.

She will be the one to sign a letter allowing all this to happen, but for now she says there has been “no ascertainment” or, as a spokeswoman put it more clearly, she has not yet found that “a winner is clear”.

Team Biden is said to be considering legal action, though other options are on the table, according to a Biden official speaking to Reuters.

The Department of Justice is also “looking into” allegations by Republicans that illegal votes were cast in Nevada and Pennsylvania, NBC News reported Tuesday.

The investigations were disclosed after Attorney General William Barr, in a memo, authorized federal prosecutors to probe “specific” claims of voter fraud even before the election results of the race between President Donald Trump and President-elect Joe Biden are certified.
