By Aaron Humes: Leader of the United Democratic Party and likely leader of the Opposition Patrick Faber has conceded today’s election.
In a short video address posted on Facebook, Faber, re-elected representative for the Collet Division, said he had called the PUP’s John Briceno to offer “heartfelt congratulations” on their apparent victory and success in their coming administration.
“The challenges that (Briceno) and his government will face will not be easy and he will need all the support in order that he can see our great nation through the long road of recovery, not just from the recent floods, but from the impact and effects of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Faber said from what appears to be party headquarters in Belize City.
He called for national unity among all Belizeans, UDP, PUP and third party and independent candidates to take on our national challenges.
Faber in turn saluted the public officers who worked the election Day (“true heroes”), the voters who came out in near-record numbers to exercise their right, and the candidates who participated.
Faber promised his UDP would be a “formidable Opposition,” holding the new Government to its principles of good governance, strong economic development, a social safety net and others.
In closing he reminded that our young democracy is tonight’s winner, as we once again come together after having selected our chosen destiny together.
