By Aaron Humes: Belize is bracing for another potential surge of COVID-19 cases in the aftermath of political activity in the last month or so.

The Ministry of Health, soon to be under new political management, announced today that “While we acknowledge that COVID-19 is here to stay, we do want to minimize the morbidity and mortality associated with it and avoid overwhelming our health system.”

It added, “We need to continue to remind ourselves that the numbers in some areas are going up, so that the essential prevention measures such as practicing physical distancing; wearing a mask properly and avoiding large / social gatherings is of paramount importance in cutting back on the number of cases.”

Of the 76 new cases from 258 samples, Corozal shows 19 cases; Orange Walk, 9; Belize District, 18; Stann Creek District, 28; and Toledo, 2.

The Corozal cases are distributed among Corozal Town (nine); San Narciso (three); and San Andres, Ranchito, Concepcion, Santa Clara, Carolina, Libertad, and Cristo Rey villages.

Orange Walk Town has four new cases; two each in Trial Farm and San Luis, and one in San Lazaro.

Sixteen new cases have been reported in Belize City, one from Sunset Park (Western Paradise) and one from out of town (Caledonia, Corozal).

Ten cases were reported in San Juan (Cowpen); two each in Independence, Seine Bight, the South Stann Creek area, and one each in Placencia, Sagitun Farm, and Maya Mopan. Five were reported in Bella Vista, Toledo and two each originally from Belmopan and Benque Viejo, while both of Toledo’s cases are from Punta Gorda.

28 recoveries have been reported and 43.7% of our cases remain active.
