By BBN Staff: Guatemalan authorities have arrested Mexican pilot Joel Amaya, 60, for smuggling US$14 million worth of cocaine and getting into a shoot out with police, reports the Daily Mail.

Amaya reportedly survived a disastrous crash landing that killed one of his fellow drug smugglers on Monday. Guatemalan aviation authorities had detected the illegal flight, which had come in from Venezuela, and ordered it to land, with Amaya eventually crashing in an open field in the southwestern municipality of Retalhuleu.

When security forces arrived Amaya began shooting at them and they shot back, eventually wounding him. He was taken for medical treatment along with another man, Colombian national Nicolás Cruz, 24. The third man, found dead at the scene, was identified as one Audias Trinidad, 27, his nationality remains unknown.

Police confiscated some 1,028 sealed packages of cocaine, US$6,000 in cash, cell phones, and GPS devices from the men apprehended.
