Public Service Union thanks public officers for a successful election

Posted: Friday, November 13, 2020. 2:20 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Public Service Union (PSU) extended its thanks today to Public Officers across the country for the work they put in to ensure that the November 11 General Elections ran smoothly.

The PSU noted that, while elections for the regular citizen consists only of showing up to the polls and voting, the election duties of a public officer begin from the day elections are declared. The PSU notes that those duties include attending meetings and training, visiting polling stations, and setting up counting rooms, among other things.

“On Election Day, most public officers are up by 4:00 a.m. in order to reach their respective polling stations by 6:00 a.m. Some Public Officers do not leave their counting areas until 2:00 a.m. the following morning, which means they work for almost 22 hours.,” the PSU said.

The union also noted that election duties during the 2020 general elections were made increasingly more difficult due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and the strict health protocols that had to be adhered to at the polling stations.

‘To those Public Officers who showed up and worked diligently to run a smooth and peaceful election, we send a heartfelt “Thank You!” We commend and acknowledge you for your hard work and dedication in making voting a safe, convenient, and positive experience for the voters,” the Union said.

The PSU also encouraged Belizeans countrywide to acknowledge Public Officers for a job well done during the elections.
