By Aaron Humes: The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida, says that while Hurricane Iota is churning over the southwestern Caribbean headed towards Central America, another system prepares to form up.
As of 6 p.m. this evening, the NHC said, “An area of low pressure could form in a few days over the central or southwestern Caribbean Sea. Development, if any, of this system should be slow to occur late this week while it moves slowly westward across the southwestern Caribbean Sea.
The Hurricane Center does not forecast a system forming over the next 48 hours (“near zero percent”), but there is a one-in-five chance of one forming within the next five days. If this system forms and strengthens, it would become the 31st named storm in 2020 and a new record for the number of named storms formed in a year would again be set.
Stay tuned for continued updates and the latest on Iota.
