Hopkins man still missing; body reported floating near Saddle Caye still not found

Posted: Monday, November 16, 2020. 9:31 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: A Hopkins man who was reported missing last week is still missing today according to ASP Alejandro Cowo. The 33 year old fisherman, Ronald Palma left Hopkins with a friend and was last reported to be on Bread and Butter Caye off the southern coast of Belize.

The wife of the fisherman visited police yesterday and told police that she last heard from Palma on Thursday, 12 November.

According to the police, Palma may have left the caye on a canoe en-route to Hopkins following a misunderstanding he had while on the island. Cowo says that based on initial investigations, no foul play is suspected.

Yesterday, Breaking Belize News (BBN) reported that a body was seen floating near Saddle Caye located between Hopkins and Seine Bight village and a search party, including police and the Belize Coast Guard, was dispatched to the area.

In an interview today, ASP Alejandro Cowo reported that despite searching yesterday and this morning, the body was not found nor has the canoe been located. However, due to the prevailing weather, the search party had to be called back to base.
