Hurricane Iota weakens to Category 1 after making landfall in Nicaragua

Posted: Tuesday, November 17, 2020. 9:43 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Hurricane Iota, which made landfall in Nicaragua last night as a massive Category 4 hurricane, has since weakened to a Category 1, according to the United States National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Iota made landfall around 10:40 p.m. on Monday, with sustained winds of 155 miles per hour, those winds have since gone down to 85 miles per hour. Despite weakening, the NHC warned that Iota could still bring “life-threatening storm surge, catastrophic winds, flash flooding, and landslides” in several places within Central America.

The NHC also noted that Iota’s impact was made worse because Nicaragua was still trying to manage the impact of Hurricane Eta that hit a week prior, and made landfall only 15 miles from where Iota did. The hurricane also left severe flooding in Colombia.

While projections are for the storm to weaken even further, it is expected to drop around 30 inches of rain, as it moves further inland across northern Nicaragua and into southern Honduras overnight into Wednesday. People along its projected path are reportedly scrambling to find a shelter.
