Flood warning in effect for several districts

Posted: Wednesday, November 18, 2020. 1:14 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The National Meteorological Service of Belize (Met Service) has issued a flood warning for the Belize, Cayo, Stann Creek, and Toledo districts.

The Met Service said that the flood warning is due to the heavy rains associated with Tropical Depression Iota, which is expected to affect the country for the next few days.

“Residents in the Belize River Valley and downstream to the coast should remain vigilant as the rising floodwaters move downstream to the coast,” the Met Service said.

There is also a small craft warning in effect for Belize’s coastal waters. Operators of small crafts are advised to seek safe harbor.

As of 3:00 a.m. Tropical Depression Iota was centered near latitude 13.7N, longitude 88.3W, or about 20 miles Northeast of El Papalon, El Salvador. Iota was moving to the west-southwest at 13mph with maximum sustained winds of 35mph.
