By BBN Staff: Reuters is reporting that Pfizer Incorporated is preparing to apply for emergency authorization to start mass-producing its COVID-19 vaccine after results of its final clinical trials showed it to be 95 percent effective.

Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech are expected to make the application in the next few days for its two-dose vaccine BNT162b2, and will submit two months’ worth of safety data along with the clinical trial results.

Enrico Bucci, biologist at Temple University in Philadelphia, called it a “special day” at the end of the trial, noting that it was the first time in human history that a vaccine went through large-scale clinical trials in less than a year.

Pfizer said that the vaccine was “well-tolerated” by volunteers in the trials, stressing that the side effects were mostly mild to moderate, and cleared up quickly. Side effects included headache and fatigue, with only 2 percent out of 8,000 participants experiencing headaches at the first dose, and 3.8 percent experiencing fatigue by the second dose.

“With hundreds of thousands of people around the globe infected every day, we urgently need to get a safe and effective vaccine to the world,” Pfizer Chief Executive, Albert Bourla said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s vaccine advisory committee is expected to review and discuss the data in a public meeting that will likely be held in December.

Pfizer also reiterated that it expects to make as many as 50 million vaccine doses this year, enough to protect 25 million people and then produce up to 1.3 billion doses in 2021.
