Prime Minister John Briceno makes first national address; laments state of economy

Posted: Wednesday, November 18, 2020. 4:57 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: New Prime Minister, John Briceño, has released his first national address, giving an update on the state of affairs with the economy and national finances.

At Monday’s Cabinet meeting, members heard that the state of economic affairs was poor, to say the least. Revenues have tumbled by nearly a quarter or over $166 million – worse than expected, according to Briceno.

And Government has “maxed out the credit card,” as Briceno puts it: the former administration borrowed as much as $30 million per month just to meet public service salaries.

On the COVID-19 front, a comprehensive plan for fighting the spread of the virus is being created by the new Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat, in consultation with his team of advisers.

More to come.
