By BBN Staff: Scientists in the United Kingdom are researching the effectiveness of certain types of mouthwash in killing COVID-19, reports the Independent.

Researchers at  Cardiff University, say they have discovered that mouthwashes can kill the virus in 30 seconds; however, their research paper has neither been published nor reviewed by other scientists.

The researchers say that mouthwashes with at least 0.07% cetypyridinium chloride (CPC) showed “promising signs” of eliminating the virus under laboratory conditions. While mouthwash cannot be seen as an effective treatment for COVID-19 since it cannot enter the respiratory tract or lungs, scientists believe the use of mouthwashes could form an integral part of people’s preventative routines such as hand washing and mask wearing.

There is an upcoming clinical trial being planned to test if mouthwash helps diminish levels of the virus in the saliva of virus patients at the University Hospital of Wales. That research expected to be completed in early 2021.

Scientists have stressed that the research is not intended to take away from the established protocols already in place and that people should continue to wear masks and sanitize their hands often.
